MARIN MAY ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS!

 

Marin (Katie Maxwell) was kind enough to answer YOUR questions!  So people, the following is what no article has ever divulged.  Below are the answers to your up close and personal questions!  Some of you sent in very similar questions as others.  We got to as many questions as we could!

I want to thank Marin for being the bubbly and most amazing person that she is!  All I know is that I was caught in a snowstorm, and when I got back and checked my voice mail, there was a message from her.  Talk about the best pickme-up!  We had something like a 3 + hour phone conversation!!  2/22/01.

Conversation Tidbits: The curls are natural!  Marin loves 80s music, but is a total fan of the Dave Mathews Band.  She hates doing laundry but loves cleaning.  She's a vegetarian.  She lives with her boyfriend, Keith (what a lucky guy!).  If she were to have a dog, it would be a big dog. She's 23 years old at the time of this conversation and has an older and younger brother.  Marin is just...SO COOL, and those of you who have met her know why!

I note that your aunt is an opera singer. Are you also a singer, or do you play any instruments?

I’M A SINGER.  I PLAYED THE PIANO AND THE GUITAR BADLY AND I ALSO WAS KNOWN TO PLAY BELLS AT CHURCH WHEN I WAS LITTLE.

Since you were a child actor, are the current friends you hang out
with also former child actors?

NO.  I HAVE FRIENDS NOW WHO ARE ACTORS, BUT THEY WEREN’T CHILD ACTORS.

The age gap between you and most of the other cast in V was wide, but are you friends with any of the cast today? Did you enjoy meeting up with them at the September con? Did they recognize you now that you're an adult?

I LOVED MEETING UP WITH THEM AT THE CON! I’M KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH FRANK AND SHANNON ASHMORE, KEN JOHNSON.  I HAVE DAVID PACKER’S PHONE NUMBER BUT I HAVEN’T USED IT YET. I’M KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH MICKEY JONES.

When you were little and working on the V mini-series, did you have a favorite Resistance or Visitor cast member?

I DIDN’T WORK WITH THE VISITORS VERY MUCH.  I REMEMBER ROBERT ENGLUND BEING VERY SWEET.  HE WAS THE ONLY PERSON THAT KEPT ME FROM BEING SCARED TOTALLY OUT OF MY PANTS!  I PLAYED WITH BRANDY (GOLD) A LOT.  I LOVE FAYE (GRANT). BRANDY, MICHAEL, PENNY, BLAIR, VIVEKA, DAVID, MARC, SHANNON, FRANK—EVERYBODY! I LOVED EVERYBODY!

5. Do you ever watch the V mini-series or the TV series? (Do you have videotape set?)

NO, I WISH I HAD THE VIDEOTAPE SET. I RENTED IT AT BLOCKBUSTER.

Is Marin May your real name or a stage name?

IT IS MY REAL NAME.

Are you still part of the Hollywood scene or are you doing something else? ie. working in other areas.

When I spoke with you at the convention you indicated that you wanted to start a website, I was wondering if you have done so? 

GRACE--THAT’S SO SWEET. I DON’T HAVE A WEBSITE YET BUT WHEN I GET ONE, ILANA WILL INFORM YOU. SEND ILANA A PICTURE OF YOU.

I'm an aspiring screenwriter (as most people in L.A. are), I recently wrote a script in which I believe if produced, you would make the perfect lead. Would you be interested in reading it?

GRACE--YES, SURE, I’D LOVE TO READ IT! SEND IT TO ILANA AND SHE’LL FORWARD IT TO ME.

1. As a child, how did "V" affect you? Did the lizard visitors frighten you, or did you realize they were all "pretend" monsters?

THEY ONLY EXPOSED SO MUCH TO ME, I THINK, AS A CHILD.  I REMEMBER GOING TO A SCREENING AND BEING SURPRISED ABOUT THE RAT.  I REMEMBER HAVING DREAMS ABOUT LIZARD HANDS COMING THROUGH THE FLOOR AND HIDING FROM THEM.  I THINK IT AFFECTED ME IN A POSITIVE WAY.  IT WAS KIND OF A SURREAL EXPERIENCE AS A CHILD.  I DON’T KNOW IF ANYONE’S LIFE WAS LIKE MINE WAS,  BUT IT’S MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY.

2. How did you get the role in V?

I AUDITIONED FOR IT.  I DON’T REMEMBER A LOT ABOUT THE AUDITION PROCESS.  I REMEMBER GOING INTO A BIG ROOM.  MY MOM TOOK ME. I WORKED ON A LOT OF COMMERCIALS AND PRINT WORK PREVIOUSLY, SO I WAS USED TO AUDITIONS.

3. If V were brought back and new TV movies or a new series were made, do you think it would have the same impact as it did 17 years ago?

YES. I THINK IF ANYTHING IT WOULD HAVE MORE OF AN IMPACT NOW BECAUSE IT’S A MUCH MORE POPULAR SUBJECT.  I THINK THAT MORE THAN EVER PEOPLE LOVE THE IDEA ABOUT A CONSPIRACY, ESPECIALLY ABOUT THE POLITICAL SIDE OF IT.

4. What are you currently working on these days? TV or movies?

IT’S COME AND GO AND HIT AND MISS.  IT’S NOT CONSISTENT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE BUT I HOPE IT WILL BE.

5. Was there alot of pressure on you as a child in the miniseries?

NO. I THINK THAT IT WAS A WONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL THING  -- IT ROUNDED ME AS A HUMAN BEING, ESPECIALLY DURING MY COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT.  BEING A CHILD ACTRESS IS A LOT OF PRESSURE.  GROWING UP IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IS A LOT OF PRESSURE BECAUSE I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A PEOPLE PLEASER -- YOU’RE TRYING TO BE CUTE ENOUGH AND THEY DON'T ALWAYS HIRE YOU.  I WENT TO THERAPY ABOUT THIS – IT DEFINITELY SENDS OUT A STRANGE MESSAGE TO A CHILD. IT CAN BE VOIDED UNDER CERTAIN SITUATIONS, BUT IN MY CASE, I TRIED TO SMILE AND PLEASE EVERYBODY.

6. Were they originally going to cast you in the TV series?

I JUST DISAPPEARED. I DON’T KNOW.  I REMEMBER DOING THE SCENE WITH FAYE, AND THAT WAS IT -- THAT WAS THE LAST SCENE THAT I DID.  I FELT LIKE I DIDN’T DO A GOOD ENOUGH JOB AND THAT’S WHY THEY DIDN’T BRING ME BACK.  BECAUSE I FELT LIKE I HAD TO SMILE AND BE GOOD ALL THE TIME.  MY MOM IS AN ACTRESS. THERE WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE PUT ON ME.  MAKE ME LOOK CUTE, GIVE ME TAPDANCE LESSONS, ETC.  AS AN ADULT,  I STARTED WORKING IN PRODUCTION. THAT’S’ WHEN I FOUND OUT I WANTED TO GET BACK INTO ACTING.

7. How did they make you cry in that one scene?

I DON’T REMEMBER.  IN FACT WE DID THAT SCENE TWICE. I THINK THEY JUST SAID LIKE "PRETEND THAT YOU’RE CRYING."

8. Did seeing what hard work acting could be and being a child star with all the benefits and risks (think Drew Barrymore) turn you away from Hollywood or make you want to be in more shows?

I TURNED 18 AND I PULLED AWAY FROM THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY AT FIRST.

9. Do you have a boyfriend/husband, and if not, will you marry me?

MY BOYFRIEND'S NAME IS "I HAVE A BABY BOY."  ACTUALLY, IT'S KEITH. I MET HIM BECAUSE WHEN I SAW HIS BAND, HE NEEDED HELP WITH SOME SINGING PARTS. WE HOPE TO GET MARRIED.  HE PROPOSED TO ME LIKE 2-1/2 YEARS AGO AND I SAID "OH MY GOD OF COURSE, SILLY." WE WERE AT LAGUNA BEACH AND HE SANG TO ME, AND HE WROTE OUT HOW HE PROPOSED TO ME ON THE PAPER IN HIS LYRICS.  ON JULY 24TH, 1998, HE ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM. WE WERE GOING TO GET MARRIED ON OCTOBER 17, BUT WE ENDED UP NOT DOING IT BECAUSE WE COULDN’T AFFORD IT.  ON THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE WEEKEND THE WEDDING WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HELD, I FOUND OUT I WAS ON HOLD FOR A PART ON "PARTY OF FIVE", THEN ON SUNDAY WHEN I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MARRIED, IS WHEN I LANDED THE JOB AS A BRIDE ON "PARTY OF FIVE." IT WAS DURING THAT SHOW THAT I FOUND OUT I DO NOT WANT CHIFFON ON MY DRESS!

10. Do you have any pets, and if so, what are they and their names?

NO, I'M ALLERGIC TO CATS. I REALLY WANT A DOG BUT I LIVE IN AN APARTMENT SO IT WOULDN’T BE FAIR SINCE I DON’T HAVE A YARD.

11. When's your birthday?

SEPTEMBER 9, VIRGO. SCORPIO RISING, LEO MOON.

12. Do you speak any other languages?

Espanol. I speak really bad Spinglish. I know a little tiny bit of German.  I've been to Europe once.  Went to St. Gallen, Switzerland – my aunt’s an opera singer out there.

13. What else do you remember about "V?"

 I REMEMBER THE V WRAP PARTY.  I REMEMBER THIS HUGE PARTY ON THE SOUNDSTAGE.  IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY, THERE WERE BLACKJACK TABLES -- IT WAS A BIG BASH.  IT MAY HAVE BEEN ON THE SAME SOUNDSTAGE THAT WE TOOK THAT PICTURE FOR PEOPLE MAGAZINE.

14. What was it like when Julie was giving you CPR?

I REMEMBER FAYE PUTTING LOTS OF GUM IN HER MOUTH AND TELLING ME HOW EVERYTHING WAS GOING TO BE OKAY.
